About the GS1 X-dimension

The "X-dimension" is the width of one QR module — the smallest dot in the code. GS1 publishes a minimum and a recommended value for consumer-facing scanning:

  • 0.495 mm — GS1 minimum X-dimension. Below this, phone cameras struggle.
  • 0.625 mm — GS1 recommended X-dimension. Comfortable for typical handheld scanning.
  • 4 modules — Quiet zone each side. The white border around the data grid is what lets the camera find the code.
